Game 4 versus Carson Colts North ended in a 6-6 tie. For the season the Jaguars have scored 109 total points and have only surrendered 12. Midway through the ‘98 season they are 3-0-1 and in position to win their Division.
Both teams turned the ball over 8 times each (Colts: 2 fumbles, 2 interceptions and 4 times on downs; Jaguars: 1 interception and 7 times on downs). This is the first game that the Jaguars were even on the Giveaway/Takeaway ratio = 0. They were +8 vs. Corona, +1 at Rowland Heights and +2 at Imperial Cities.
Our Jaguar defense only allowed 6 points against a very tough Carson Colts offense. Carson’s lack of discipline (11 Colt penalties for 70 yards), helped them to stop themselves.
Carson’s quick swarming defense shut down the Jaguar’s rushing game but could not contain their passing attack.
• Jaguar passing was 60% successful with 74 total yards and one touchdown (averaging 14.8 yards/pass).
• Jaguar offense only rushed for 31 total yards on 34 carries (averaging 0.9 yards/carry).
The only Jaguar touchdown came on halfback pass to the quarterback. After the hand-off, blocking on the right side held up while running back Bryan Schutte got the lateral pass off to quarterback Josh Perez who was in between the penetrating defense (corner and end). Josh caught the pass, got away from the two defenders and managed to scamper through the rest of the Colts’ defense to score the 52 yard touchdown.
The Jaguar coaching staff called it right when they professed all week that discipline was the key to the game. Carson nearly stopped the Jaguars all day and would have won the game if their first 45-yard sweep-left for a touchdown wasn’t called back because their offense lined up off sides. Discipline works!
Travis McNaughton had a game saving day on defense. He had 3 tackles and also recovered a Colt’s fumble. Travis also had a sack (-1 yard) when the Jaguars needed one the most, on the Colt’s extra-point try that would have won the game for them. That big stop could be huge at the end of this season.
Hillard Bodie had a big game on defense with 1 interception, 1 sack, 1 tackle, fumble recovery, and 2 assists. Aaron Roy and Steven Bennett had a sack each. Bryan Schutte had two sacks and Josh Perez caught an interception.
